EEG Signal is the recording of the electrical signal generated due to the neural activity in the brain. The EEG signal can be recorded by placing the electrodes on the scalp or directly on the cortex. The EEG signal can be used for various applications one of which is car movement control. In this application of EEG signals the user can control the steering wheel angle in a continuously changing manner. The EEG signal can be used for speeding up or speeding down the car. These applications can be achieved in real time by modulating duration time of ERD/ERS corresponding to the specific imaginary movements.
Sensorimotor rhythms decrease with movement or imagery of movement and increase in the post movement period or during relaxation which is referred to as event related DE-synchronization (ERD) or synchronization (ERS). To successfully realize the above mentioned application of steering wheel movement control and speed control of the car we need to detect three imaginary movements which are left hand, right hand, foot movement and relaxation state. The classifier will classify the imaginary movements into the control commands of turning steering left, right, speeding up and no command. These commands are then feed to drive by wire system of the car which helps in controlling the steering wheel movement and speed on the car.
For the real time application of EEG signals as mentioned above the classifier should be very accurate and this presents the biggest the challenge for the application like car movement control. This application of the EEG signals is still requires a lot of research and precision hence is not ready for the real world till date. But this technology has huge potential and is capable of improving the driving experience of the user as well as standard of living of the human being.
